here come the 123s!

They Might Be Giants have been around since 1982, but have only been in my life since I first heard them on Tiny Toons Adventures back in 1990. A complete history on TMBG can be found countless places on the web, so I’ll leave the rest of the historians to that one. Today I’d like to talk about their newest release, Here Come the 123s.

I have sung many praises of They Might Be Giants’ album Here Come the ABCs. It’s one of the best albums I’ve ever heard, regardless of its target demographic. TMBG are, as I’ve said so many times, the greatest.band.ever.

Since the announcement several months ago, I have been anxiously awaiting the sequel, if you will - Here Come the 123s. It was released last week, and just arrived in our mailbox yesterday. bigR was so excited to watch it, he faked being sick just so we could hang out around the house all day and watch it several times. He’s very convincing, completing his act with not just diarrhea, but vomit as well. He’s one hell of a showman.

Here Come the 123s is pretty dang good. It’s a full half hour shorter than the ABCs DVD, but honestly that’s my only gripe. The album is chock full of catchy, family-friendly tunes you can’t help but start singing while washing dishes or cooking breakfast or … whatever it is you might be doing throughout the day.

The album starts right off with a great tune; “Zeroes”. It’s classic TMBG high-pitched melody, and it gives a clear indication this is yet again so more than “just a kids album”. Highlights include “High Five!”, “Seven”, “Seven Days of the Week (I Never Go to Work)”, “One Dozen Monkeys”, ok wait. I could just list every song on the album. It’s that good. Guaranteed you will be singing “I Never Go to Work” more times than you’ll care to admit. Extremely catchy!

The signature John & John sock puppets once again pop in between tracks to let you know what’s up next and to make you laugh. And they are hilarious.

If you’re a parent of young children and you don’t know They Might Be Giants, you are missing out, hugely. In fact, if you are alive and don’t know They Might Be Giants, you, too are missing out.

Enough talk, already, go buy these albums!
